Description:
AUSTRALIAN WEATHER FOR THE IPHONE All the essential Australian weather information you need in the palm of your hand - presented quickly, clearly and elegantly. WHAT IT HAS: * Forecasts - so you know what to expect * Current Weather - so you know what is happening now * Recent Weather - so you know how we got here * Animated Radar - so you know where it is raining, and whether it is heading your way * Extended Pro Features - available via in-app purchase WHAT IT DOES: This application provides frequently updated weather forecasts, observations and radar loops from official Australian Bureau of Meteorology sources. WHY YOU WOULD WANT IT: The weather information it provides is of much higher quality, immediacy and relevance than what is provided by US weather suppliers via the built-in iPhone weather application. It also includes important local current weather warnings and alerts. MORE DETAILS: Forecasts of up to 7 days are available for all officially available forecast cities/locations, and local observations of current temperature, humidity, wind and rainfall are typically updated at least once every 10 minutes (less often for smaller locations). If you are interested in capital city weather, you will often see actual official measurements only minutes after they are taken. Also, this application shows you exactly how long ago the observations were made - no need to wonder whether the temperature and rainfall observations you are seeing were taken hours ago. More than 250 Australian towns and city forecast locations are available in this application, and the user can compile a short-list of favourite cities for quickest possible viewing. Each forecast location includes up to 6 nearest official observation locations, accessible by side-scrolling action. About 50 different radars around mainland Australia have been included. The radar view also has a "Locate Me" feature which queries the iPhone's GPS and then centres the radar map on your current location along with an animated crosshair cursor. So no need to lose your location within a heavy rain band. Radar data delivery has been carefully optimised to arrive quickly on your iPhone. Often you will find that the radar loop is already loaded and running as soon as you switch to the radar view for your selected city. And each radar image shown is identified with a label showing exactly how many minutes ago it was scanned - a significant improvement over other applications that only show you the image times in GMT timezone. BACKGROUND: This application was created by an Australian software developer with a BSc and PhD in meteorology and oceanography, and a passion for helping people via technology. Your feedback is welcomed, and the application includes an email link on its information screen for that purpose. NOTES: - This application contains weather data *only* for Australian places. It is offered to overseas users only for those who want to keep an eye on Australian weather. - Forecasts for regional locations for which BOM does not supply 7 day official forecasts have been extended with BOM computer modeling data. This is not as reliable as human-generated forecasts, but can still provide useful guidance about temperature and rainfall trends for those locations where this is not available from BOM published forecasts.

Reviews:
Yay, the best AU weather app yet, and reasonably priced By: bigyahu - 03-Nov-2008 Version: 1.3 I'm pleased to see the developer not trying to sell this for >$5 as it's very good value for what it is right now. The visual design is clear and appealing, especially the opacity over the cloudy sky in the background. Users may not realise they can set a home city by just choosing a city and leaving it open when closing the app. Then when they launch the app again, that city is presented. No need to have a discreet 'set home city' field in prefs. My only criticism is the city lookup, which asks you to roll thru a list of cities and towns to find one close to your destination. Scrolling through a list of unfamiliar place names and trying to guess which might be closest to the destination requires that I know more about these places than I do. I think the fix is simple: BOM weather locations are unlikely to change much over time, so host a small DB of AU town names and associate them with nearest weather locations so that a user can search for the place name in the app and have it lookup a nearby weather station from the DB. In fact, the full Auspost postcode DB is only 147K, you could probably load it into the app itself and save the bandwidth. Less simple solution would be to break the current weather station list down by state, but even then, when I'm looking for a weather report for Ballina, I have no idea which of the NSW weather stations is nearest to Ballina. All in all, a great 1.0!
Now that's my Weather App! By: iBest - 27-Jan-2009 Version: 1.2 I bought this application based on the reviews. Went to the BoM website, and the data values were identical - it's not always the case with other apps as I have a widget that says its data is from the BoM, but that's not true as the data does not correspond. This is by far the most reliable app for Australian weather information on the iPhone. Blame it on the BoM if the temperature outside is different from that of this application. Like a previous user mentioned, I have also replaced the location of the original weather app on my iPhones (got 2) with his one!
One of my best purchases By: UberReviewer - 24-Feb-2009 Version: 1.3.1 If you live in Australia then I can't reccomend this app more. For only a couple of dollars you get an accurate forcast for the day with information such as wind speed and directions, sunrise and sunset times, high and low points and heaps more. One of my favoriteparts is the radar which shown where rain is, how heavy it is and what direction it's moving in. This is the one of the most useful and cleanly executed apps I have seen.
Brilliant! By: Strewth - 03-Jan-2009 Version: 1.2 Excellent app, equal favourite with AroundMe. Does not actually have half the faults attributed by the guy pushing PWA, who just seems unable to use this excellent app - although it's hard to credit as it is so intuitive. I haven't used PWA so I can't compare, but I like multiscreens for clarity and layout. This is the best buck and a bit I have spent on iPhone - or probably on anything since paddle pops were 20c each!
Awesome! By: lfrohling - 03-Mar-2009 Version: 1.3.1 Great product and well worth the money. I contacted the author and he was kind enough to listen to my feedback and helped me get more from the product :) The radar i quite nice/fancy and I'm sure it would be useful for someone but I really liked the comprehensive summary of the weather is words (not just the sunny, cloudy, rainy symbols and the high and lows you get with the inbuilt one) as well as in-depth summaries of days to come.
Great! By: djc0 - 06-Nov-2008 Version: 1.0 My first impressions are very positive.I noticed a small problem (no todays forecast for locations where BOM provides only a 7 day forecast - the 7 day forecast in the forecast tab begins the day after the current day!). Contacted the developer about this and got a speedy reply (will be fixed in next update). Good customer service. Impressed. Other than this oversight, this is a very pollished and functional application. Highly recommended.
Outstanding, Very Well Done. By: Trevor E - 21-Jan-2009 Version: 1.2 I'm not sure why it is, but it is only in the last few weeks that I have found the default weather app, being so innaccurate??? Anyway, congrats to the developer, if every Aussie iPhone buyer doesn't grab this app, they're dreaming... One final task for you though, work out how to get rid of the default weather app, and replace it with this, without jailbreaking the phone and you could charge $9.99 for it, and we'd still buy it.
Beautiful (& now even better) By: LaughingBird - 11-Dec-2009 Version: 2.0 Yes, there was an App Store problem yesterday where it kept downloading the old version while telling you the new version was available. But today the Store have got their act together and the new version looks great. Not a lot of changes to the basic app, which is still very very good. But the free trial of the new pro features look super impressive. Lots of people probably wouldn't use them, so I guess it makes sense that it would be a paid extra, but for those who want them, they are beautifully presented. What I said in reviewing the earlier versions still stands: The two (now 3) Australian weather apps both provide access to the same information from the same source, so the differences are in the interface. Having used both for a while, I definitely prefer this one. To my eye, it is more attractively laid out, the presentation feels more intuitively accessible and Apple native. It also seems to load faster, especially the radars. It is basically a matter of personal taste because they are both good, but for my taste, this one is the clear winner.
must have app By: denevans - 11-Dec-2009 Version: 2.0 In my earlier review I said wouldn't it be great if it had synoptic charts. Well V2.0 Pro has them! I think this is the best iPhone weather app, worldwide! Absolutely great. I think paying for the Pro upgrade is justified. The Pro upgrade is major. I have not had any problems regarding crashes etc as others have mentioned. No probs at all. I'm running iPhone OS 3.1.2 with a Mac running 10.6. The iPhone is a 32GB 3Gs. Just paid for the Pro upgrade. This is a must have app for Australian iPhone owners.
Awesome! By: lfrohling - 10-Dec-2009 Version: 1.7.1 Great product and well worth the money. My default and only used weather app. Edit: I don't like the way I have to pay to "upgrade" my already paid edition... Im also unwilling to update as they will probably be nag screens and annoying ads demanding I pay more...

The outlook is fine and sunny... By: Jimmyjams35 - 09-Jan-2009 Version: 1.2 Nice weather application. Comprehensive & easy to use as well. I never had a problem with the built in application. I think it provided good basic information that was accurate enough for my needs but this is definitely superior. Very useful and a must have for people who live in other parts of Australia who aren't catered for in the native app like Adelaide, Perth, & Brisbane as well as 100's of other small towns and cities.
Excellent, intuitive interface By: Richim - 29-Jan-2009 Version: 1.3 This is a very handy, easy to use weather app. I use it all the time instead of the standard weather app or Foxtel weather channel. It's very intuitive. I'm not so keen on the changes in the most recent update though (28th Jan 09), I preferred the previous look. A couple of days back I also bought Pocket Weather AU as they had a sale on and also to support Aussie developers. I have to agree that this one is much better and I recommend anyone tossing up between the two to go with Oz Weather.
Thumbs Up Worried about new upgrade By: BiteliAU - 10-Dec-2009 Version: 1.7.1 See my version before reading I see this app has a free upgrade available and temporary free access to features being offered in the new pro version. I wonder if the so called splash screen is nothing but a nag screen reminding us that there is another product available? What would I need a splash screen for? It's supposedly set to open up on the page with my local current weather conditions. I'm also worried about this new development. Does it mean we have the present "amature" version of the product (if he wants to call the new one a pro version then allow me to apply the same naming convention to the older product). Also, if the splash screen is a nag screen promoting another product then doesn't that mean our present paid product has in fact been downgraded?COME ON. BETTER INFORMATION WITH YOUR UPGRADE BLURB PLEASE! This is one of my most used apps. It's all that I need from an Australian weather app. Other apps developers should aim for this high standard. It runs smoothly, looks great and because it gets it's feed direct from the BOM it's always up to date. I'm by and large unimpressed with most of the apps I've downloaded from the store but not this one. Well done.
A great app just got better! ... By: Jay&Dee - 29-Jan-2009 Version: 1.3 Have been a user for a few weeks now and have the found the application to be brilliant! Response to email support is way more than you'd expect. Send an email and you'll get a response usually straightaway. I requested some additional regional stations be available and when I downloaded/intstalled Version 1.3 this morning, there they were! The sideways swiping that'll take you to adjacent weather stations is a brilliant additional. Sunrise/sunset and forecast information on the "Current" page will also come in handy. Keep up the great work!
Totally awesome app!!! By: PumpyAction - 07-Feb-2009 Version: 1.3 No wonder this is ranked#1. This is the greatest app which I'm sure will only get better and better! To the developer, Ahoy mate!! crack open a couple of beers, I've already left the money on the fridge for ya!! Keep up the terrific work - thanks. To the guys that can't get this app to work, you are in the minority - instead of flaming the developer try troubleshooting your computers and iPhones/iPods.

must have app By: denevans - 17-Apr-2009 Version: 1.4.1 This is an excellent weather app. It is very hard to fault. I use this app all the time. I have one suggestion for the developer: why not include a screen giving the current synoptic chart. If this was done the user could seen if a cold front is on its way. If this was included I don't think I would have any further suggestions. The app would be complete. This is a must have app for Australian iPhone owners.
Sensational. By: DomoHomo - 29-Apr-2009 Version: 1.4.1 Looks good. Fast. Data hot off the press from the Bureau of Meteorology. If you don't have a current internet connection (iPod touch) it shows you the last updated forecast instead of a blank screen. You will never need to watch another weather report again. Temperature data is available for most major regional hubs. If you live in a very small rural area you may have to rely on the forcasts for a nearby town. Radar live rain maps can be enlarged to cover most of the country though and with gps or cell tower triangulation you can pinpoint yourself.
Beautiful By: LaughingBird - 02-Dec-2008 Version: 1.1 The two Australian weather apps both provide access to the same information from the same source, so the differences are in the interface. Fast, simple, accurate By: djc0 - Jun 27, 2009 Version: 1.4.1 I don't understand the bad reviews. This app is great. It looks good, is simple to use, and updates fast with local information (BOM). The animated radar is a nice touch. I even emailed the author a few weeks ago with a feature request and found it in the most recent update! As for TWC app, yeah it's OK. But it's basically made for the US market not Australia. It's been raining here all day and yet the radar shows nothing. Also has limited local locations. And advertising. Try it first cause it's free, but this one's so much better for locals. I've gone through so many weather apps and think I've finally found "the one". This is certainly worth the megar asking price. Highly recommended.
